| | Stairway to Heaven--Led Zeppelin | ] | Another semester of college, done. A hellish one at that. Try balancing four ensembles (Symphonic Band, Concert Orchestra, Basketball Band, and Marching Band) with separate rehearsals, two fraternity ensembles (secondary band and Mu Phi Wind Ensemble), 17 hours worth of classes, a job that requires strict attention to detail, and a social life (being 21!). It's pretty rough. But I appreciated this semester because it actually FELT busy--I was actually putting myself to work, as a musician and a conductor. Not to mention that it felt like this semester didn't exist at all.
When I got advised this last semester, I was greeted with some odd news. I'm taking 18 hours next semester, but after that, I have 18 hours left--6 of which count for student teaching. Uh, what? I'm way past the halfway point in a 5 year program, with five semesters done, and three full semesters left. While it's kind of awesome, I almost can't believe it. It feels like we just graduated high school...but we didn't. I have one semester of advanced conducting, one class in which the final is to conduct the UNT Concert Band, one class that meets at a middle school, where we conduct the band, and then I'm out in the schools, student teaching. Holy crap.
But in long terms, that's a year away. Before shit gets too real, I'll stop pondering about the future and focus on the present. It's Christmas and it's snowing in Denton. Damn! Christmas always reminds me of how much I suck at wrapping presents; my brother and I had a good laugh about that yesterday. Tomorrow, after my family does the Christmas thing, the four of us will be heading to Las Vegas. I'm stoked! I'm hoping to take lots of pictures...and since we're staying at the Stratosphere, hopefully we'll ride the Big Shot on top of the tower. It's been six years since we've been, when Ricky turned 21, so I'm anxious to see how it's changed. After that, it's New Year's, and then I've got another week to relax in Corpus.
Merry Christmas! |
